Located on the
Guadiana River you will find the city of Badajoz.
Still a busy city, Badajoz was one a bustling, industrious city,
food processing was the main industry here, forming active trade
routes across the nearby border to Portugal.
The history
of Badajoz goes back over 1000 years. The romans made this fortress
city with great defences, the evidence of which still survives today.
On Muela Hill you will find a walled precinct with large gates and
bastions. The city has seen many wars and bloody battles, being
repeatedly attacked by the Portuguese and also the site of a seige
during the Peninsular War with the French.

In 1950 the
city started modernisation projects, irrigating the city and providing
electricity to city dwellers. If you visit now you will find a city
full of history, with a modern feel. Although if you visit one of
the local cafe's you may get to sample an ancient Badajozion recipe.
It is recommended that you take a look at the Citadel (alcazaba),
it has the popularly known “Esparitaperros” set amongst its towers.
The Palacio de los Duques de la Roca is situated
between its walls and has been converted into the site of the Archealogical
Museum.
